먹 묵 막

어느 것에 매료될 때는 이끌리는 이유를 알 수 없이 시작하다가도 점차 그 이유를 발견하는 시간의 흐름을 겪는다. 그저 놓여있는 검은 고무판은 어둡고도 곧으며 어떠한 것도 수용하지 않을 듯한 모습으로 마음을 끈다. 그리고선 때로는 빛이 난다. 물을 만나 반짝이는 검은 판은 무엇도 투영하지 않을 것 같던 하나의 막이 모든 것을 수용하는 것처럼 영롱하게 반짝인다. 검은 막은 그것의 선으로 자신을 구분하면서도 그것의 면으로 주위의 것들과 동화된다. 그 반짝임에는 고무판의 모든 에너지가 함축된다.

 

유도희 작가는 그러한 에너지를 ‘드로잉’에 담는다. 그는 고무판을 자연 공간으로 끌고 나와 한 번의 필체와 같은 느낌으로 설치한다. 검정 고무판은 그가 선택한 지점에서 새로운 형태를 갖추게 되고, 자연과 어우러져 조화의 의미를 생산한다. 그 의미는 자연 속에서 형태를 취하고 있는 검은 판 자체로써 완결되지 않으며 풍경과 이어지는 하나의 이야기로 존재한다.

 

오브제가 전달하는 이야기의 결말은 작가 또한 알 수 없다. 어쩌면 이야기의 끝이 존재하지 않을지도 모른다. 작가는 이야기의 완성이 아닌 느끼는 대로 따라 가다보면 마주하게 되는 오롯한 순간을 표현하고자 한다. 그 순간에 작가는 카메라를 들고 그의 ‘드로잉’을 사진에 담는다. 그는 붓 대신 카메라를 활용하고, 흑백으로 먹을 대체한다. 이 모든 작업, 고무판을 끌고 와 새로운 모습을 연출하는 것은 작가의 에너지가 담긴 행위이며, 주변 환경과 어우러진 고무판 자체 에너지의 발산이다.

 

작가는 전시 ‘먹,묵,막’에서 사진으로 담았던 그의 ‘드로잉’을 실내 공간으로 옮겨온다. 자연 속으로 찾아갔던 그와 고무판의 몸짓은 화이트 큐브 속에 전시되어 관객들에게 현장감을 제공한다. 고무판은 하얀 도화지와 같은 배경에서 먹과 같은 이미지로 연출되고, 관람자들은 작가로 인해 순간포착 되었던 이야기의 찰나를 직접 경험할 수 있게 된다. 하얀 바탕 속 검은 오브제는 하나의 막이 되고, 감상자들은 전시장에 세워진 막 속에 자신의 경험과 이야기를 담아 갈 수 있을 것이다.  글 김수연

                                                             Mək Muk Mak

                                                                    [ink, black, membrane]

When you are drawn to something, you start something without knowing exactly why, but overtime, you begin to see the reason. A piece of black rubber board simply lying around appears dark and a porous that doesn’t seem to take in anything. But then at times it shines. It shines brilliantly when it meets water as if now it is taking in everything. It uses itself as a line to distinguish itself from, while at the same time as a surface to blend in with what’s around it. In the shine, all of the rubber board’s energy becomes concentrated.

 

Artist Dohee Yoo captures this energy in her ‘drawing.’ She drags the rubber board out into nature and installs it like a calligraphy completed in one stroke. The rubber board adopts a variation of forms in its interaction with nature in the very spot that the artist has chosen, that produces a new meaning. Its meaning is not complete simply as a rubber board lying in nature, but as production of a ‘story’ that keeps unfolding in time.

 

The ending of the ‘story’ is not known to the artist herself. The ending may not even exist. The artist tries to capture not the completion of a story, but the moment that one meets by simply following one’s own intuition. At that moment, the artist picks up the camera and takes a photograph of her ‘drawing.’ She uses the camera instead of a brush, black and white photograph in place of black ink. The entire process — dragging the rubber board out into nature that produces a new form and meaning in its interaction with nature — is an act that distills the artist’s own energy as well as the energy of the rubber board.

 

In this exhibition ‘Mɘk Muk Mak', the artist brings inside what she has captured outside in a photography of her ‘drawing.’ What has been brought out into nature — the rubber board and its newly adopted form — is now displayed in a closed white cube, producing a sense of surreality for the audience. The rubber board, against the backdrop of a white canvas, appears like black ink, and the audience gets to 'meet' the moment that the artist tried to capture in her drawing. The black object in the white background becomes a membrane, and in this membrane, the audience gets to produce their own experiences and stories. Translator, Jayon You

                                                               먹 묵 막

                                                      막이 오른다

                                                      검정색 노방에 흰색 사를 달고는

                                                      오늘은 하얀 꼬깔 대신 검은 고깔을 썼던가

                                                      번뇌를 없애고자 함에 먹이 필요하다고 중얼대던 그였다

                                                      열 한번의 밤이 오고 가야지만 빛을 보는

                                                      가마 속 그을음처럼

                                                      무거운 마음은 연막 앞에서 떨어지고

                                                      가벼운 숭고함 만이 내 안까지 날아 들어 올라고,

                                                      치맛자락 휘날리며 빌다가 때로는 장막인양 우두커니 섰다

                                                      어린애 눈동자 같은 먹이라 했다.

                                                      묵은 가마에서 왔으니 태워도 남는다고,

                                                      타고 있는 것이 저인지 춤사위인지 알 수 는 없어도

                                                      막이 내리면 붓 끝자락에 남을
